Ever wondered why refurbished/reconditioned stairlifts are so popular? Well you’re about to find out in this post! Reconditioned stairlifts, or refurbished, or pre-used stairlifts are our most popular item. There’s a good reason for this too, and it’s not just because they are so much cheaper than new models.

We offer a full 2 year warranty on all our refurbished stairlifts – covering you for parts, labour and call-outs. That’s not a common offer with second hand stairlifts and some companies offer far less! We offer a full 2 year warranty because we only buy the very best second hand stairlift makes and models. We thoroughly refurbish them, making sure any worn out parts are replaced and we give them a full bill of health – changing the batteries (a common cause of faults) for brand new ones.

Only when we are happy do the reconditioned stairlifts go out to customers.

Why Our Refurbished Stairlifts Sell The Most.

Our reconditioned stairlifts sell so well because they are a lot cheaper than brand new models, and they are also very reliable!

We choose only the best models to refurbish, such as Stannah and Thyssen. We have been in the stairlift business for over 20 years and we know the models which give us the fewest problems!

When you are offering a 2 year warranty on your stairlifts, you don’t want endless call-outs all around the country when things start going wrong! It simply wouldn’t be viable. We like stairlifts that work for our customers, are reliable and require the least amount of maintenance. It works for our customers and it works for us too!

Reliable After-Care Service

UK Stairlifts Glasgow pride ourselves on our after-care service, so when you buy a stairlift from us you know you’re in good hands! We regularly service stairlifts in Glasgow and around the UK and have built our reputation on being there for our customers when they need us.

We not only do call-outs when something goes wrong, but offer regular check-ups services and MOT’s for stairlifts throughout the UK.

Our customers are our priority, and without them we wouldn’t be here! We often do call-outs at short notice too to make sure your stairlift is operational.

Need Another Reason? Speed

Another reason why people find our reconditioned stairlifts the best option for them is speed! Often someone will require a stairlift urgently and in this scenario a reconditioned stairlift is often the best option because it can be installed more rapidly than a brand new one.

With a brand new stairlift, you must order the unit from the manufacturers to specification and wait for it to be delivered. You also need to order the rail, and with a curved rail in particular, this takes much longer. With a reconditioned stairlift, the stairlifts themselves are usually in stock, waiting to go out.

This means the rail is the limiting factor when it comes to time. With a straight stairlift, rails can even be in stock and therefore get installed much faster!

Give Us A Call

So, if you’re looking for a pre-used stairlift for yours or a parent’s home, give us a call. We offer free surveys and can be there in a jiffy!

Call 0800 046 3438 or visit our contact page and leave a message.

So what is the minimum stair width for a stair lift? Our narrowest fitting stairlift can cope with a super-narrow staircase. The Flow X has a chair measurement of 613mm across the widest point and can turn sideways to accommodate a narrow staircase.

This means it can be fitted on very narrow staircases where other stairlifts can’t be installed. We have fitted this one on some incredibly narrow stairs. Technically this stairlift will fit staircases as narrow as 61cm. With a sideways tilt of the chair position while travelling, this allows more space either side.

Minimum Stair Width For A Stairlift

However, if you’re on the cusp of this measurement, don’t despair. Speak to our engineers who may be able to advise you. Even stairs which might be thought of as inaccessible can be fitted with a stairlift. An assessment of your home might be necessary to determine whether it’s feasible.

It’s not only the width which needs to be considered when it comes to installing a stairlift. Often, there are obstacles to consider, like this one we installed in Manchester.

With this particular fitting, there was a doorway right at the base of the stairs. With some models this would have been a problem. However, with the Flow 2a stairlift which we used on this one, it managed it magnificently! Here you can see how the stairlift managed this – with it’s “drop nose” rail system which eloquently avoids blocking the doorway!

More Examples Of Narrow Installations

Here’s another example of a stairlift we installed in York. This one was particularly narrow but the Flow X stairlift worked perfectly. You can see just how narrow the staircase is on this one, and how little space the stairlift takes up!

The Flow X stairlift has a patented technology called the ASL (Advanced Level and Swivelling), which means the stairlift can move and pivot simultaneously. Since the Flow series of stairlifts owns the patent on this, they have dominion over the narrowest of staircases! Most stairlifts have some ability to be installed on narrow stairs. See this post on stairlifts for very narrow and awkward stairs. But this particular model is the most agile on difficult and narrow stairs which have a curve in them.

Certain other stairlifts are quite agile too, such as the Platinum Ultimate which can also manoeuvre in a similar fashion. However, the Platinum cannot travel while pivoting, as the Flow series can. This makes it a little less agile than its competitor the Flow models!

Straight Staircase = Fewer Problems

If you have a straight staircase, that’s much less of an issue if it’s particularly narrow. There’s a lot more choice when it comes to straight, narrow stairs. We often use reconditioned/refurbished stairlifts – using the Stannah 600 for straight fits because of their reliability and their design.

Stannah have really done their homework when it comes to stairlift design. Their chairs sit well back on the rail, leaving a lot of leg room.

With a Stannah 600 on a straight staircase the minimum width is 65.9cm. But this also depends on the length of the leg. The back-to-knee or the back-to-toe measurements will determine whether the stairlift is suitable. With a Stannah 600, you have an outward facing ride position. This means the leg length is pretty important. With the Flow series as mentioned earlier, the chair faces the user down the stairs. This eliminates some of the space issue on tight staircases.

Give Us A Call

The minimum width for a stair lift does depend on other obstacles you may have near your staircase, such as doorways and corridors. However, technically, a stairlift can be fitted to staircases as narrow as 61cm in width. We have even fitted a Flow X model with only 10mm either side – so we have done some close-call jobs!

So, as you can see, stairlifts can fit on a variety of stairs, even very narrow ones! If you have a very narrow staircase, you may need an assessment of your stairs to make a decision, but we will always do our best to help you. We know how important a stairlift can be for mobility and independence in the home.

In certain situations we will recommend a specialist stairlift. These are used for particularly narrow stairs, and when other makes or models simply won’t fit. Our stairlifts for narrow stairways are the Stannah and Thyssen Krupp models. Stannah are particularly good when it comes to narrow stairs. Their design allows the seat to be placed well back on the rail. This gives you more legroom and as such they make great stairlifts for narrow and awkward staircases.

When a Stannah won’t fit a stairway, we are forced to use a Thyssen Krupp stairlift – now manufactured by Access BDD. These models are particularly good when it comes to awkward fittings. The Flow X, for example, can fit staircases as narrow as 61cm in width.

When Do You Need A Specialist Stairlift?

As you would expect, the Flow X stairlift carries a higher cost. They have a patented technology called ASL (Advanced Swivel and Levelling). This makes them a unique solution when other models won’t fit due to difficult hallways, doorways and narrow fittings.

Here’s one of our installations showing a flow X model:

You can see in this image, the stairlift has a clever “drop nose” rail. This allows the rail to end at the first step. Some other models won’t allow this as they need “run” space to park the stairlift and for easy exit. But the Flow X allows more agile installations when the Stannah models won’t fit. The Flow X stairlift is also super thin, and folds down to only 38cm in width. This allows it to be fitted on many a staircase that otherwise wouldn’t allow an installation.

The Flow X can also be installed on stairs as narrow as 61cm wide. This makes it one of the most versatile stairlifts on the market.

Stairlift Measurements – When To Choose a Slim Stairlift

In the following video you can see one of our recent installations in Yorkshire, UK. We do stairlifts in Glasgow, but we also cover the whole of the UK, too. In this fitting, you can see the measurements taken before a stairlift could be considered. With this one, it was a very narrow staircase, and a number of factors has to be considered.

We even had to do a photographic assessment of the stairway, in order to double check the narrowest stairlift would be suitable.

Summary

So, when to choose a slim stairlift such as the Flow X? We will recommend this specific model when no other stairlifts are suitable for your stairs, (unless of course you specifically want this one). Usually the Stannah 260 or 600 will fit most staircases, but in the situation where it doesn’t, sometimes a specialist stairlift such as the Flow X is required.

This does incur a higher cost, although we also supply reconditioned stairlifts when we have them in stock! Check with our team on 0800 046 3438 or visit our contact page here and leave us a message.

Are you looking for a stair lift for a narrow stairway? If so we have got you covered. A few years ago we struggled finding stairlifts for certain stairs. This puzzle caused us to look for more space-saving stairlifts which were designed specifically for narrow stairs.

We found this stairlift – the Flow X from Thyssen Krupp (now Access BDD).

This little beauty has allowed us to fit hundreds of stairlifts on stairways which were previously insurmountable by a stairlift. It’s called the Flow X and we’ve taken rather a liking to it!

Stair Lift For Narrow Stairway – The Flow X Stairlift

The Flow X stairlift is a miracle of modern technology! It allows stairlifts to be fitted to stairways as narrow as 61cm in width – in some cases even narrower! Take a look at the specs of this particular marvel!

The largest dimension is the outside arm to arm measurement (613mm). But with a pivot, the chair can accommodate stairs which are even narrower than the 61cm specifications.

But there’s more to this marvel than its mere appearance!

Stair Lift For Narrow Stairway

The Flow X has a few tricks up its sleeve too. Not only does it look the business and is super narrow, it also boasts patented technology which makes it ideal for difficult stairs. The ASL (Advanced Swivel & Levelling) technology lets it glide smoothly past even the trickiest of obstacles.

This tech allows it to move, pivot and tilt simultaneously. This makes it perfect for difficult and narrow stairs. See also stairlifts for narrow staircases, which might be awkward for a fitting. Most stairlifts move in one direction at a time. This makes for a problem if the staircase is narrow and the chair faces outwards.

The major obstacle for most stairlifts is the outward facing chair position. This reduces the ability to fit the stairlift on stairs which are narrower than the back to knee measurement (+ chair fitting room).

The Flow X, and its predecessor the Flow 2 stairlift allow for a downward facing ride position. This massively increases the legroom and so helps with difficult fittings.

Stairlift For Narrow Stairway – Stannah

Now your staircase might not necessitate such a “high-tech” stairlift as this one, and you can save some cash with another model. In fact, we specialise in reconditioned stairlifts, so whether you need a stairlift such as the Flow X, or a cheaper model, we’ve got you covered!

Another one of our fave’s is the Stannah 260 or the Stannah 600 for a narrow staircase (curved and straight respectively). Stannah have done their homework! Not only have they got superb build quality, with a reputation for making long-lasting stairlifts with the fewest problems, but they have also created a clever design which gives more scope for narrow stairs.

It’s all down to their seating position which is placed well back against the wall/bannister rail.

On the left is a Stannah 600 – a superb space saving design, and on the right is the Stannah 260, which again is superb at fitting on narrow stairs.

Which To Choose?

So which one should you choose? That firstly comes down the size and layout of your staircase. We would recommend the Flow X when necessary, since it’s the more expensive of the two, unless you particularly take a liking to it, of course.

The Flow X (or the Flow 2) are perfect when nothing else will fit! But with that comes a more expensive solution. So if you can, we would fit a Stannah, if room allows, if you’re conscious of the budget.

Give our team a call and we can offer a free assessment of your home and let you know the best solution for you.

Call 0800 046 3438 or visit our contact page and leave a message.

Recap – Stairlift For Narrow Stairs

So, to summarise, we would recommend either the Thyssen Flow X, Flow 2 or the Stannah 600 or 260 for narrow stairs.

The Flow X and Flow 2 stairlifts are more accommodating if you have a very narrow staircase. The Stannah (especially if you’re going after one of our reconditioned stairlifts) offers a more affordable solution if you’re on a budget.

Call 0800 046 3438 or visit our contact page and leave a message. We offer free home assessments with no obligation, so you’ve nothing to lose by giving us a quick call!
